High Rains | High Number of Flooded Basements

Spring and early summer brought unseasonably high rainfall totals which lead to a very busy summer for the SERVPRO of Spencer & Iowa Great Lakes team.

Many basements and crawl spaces were flooded out due to the rainfall totals.  To help prevent such issues make sure to clean out gutters, check the filter area on your sump pump, and ensure your sump is draining away from the house.

Even the driest homes experienced water damage due to the storms, take the time to check your home for potential issues.

Our Trucks Can Handle It All

At SERVPRO of Spencer & Iowa Great Lakes we invest in our equipment to ensure we not only have the most up to date equipment but also the right equipment to not disrupt your home or business.

As you can see in this photo, our trucks are equipped with extra hoses to stretch as far as necessary to get the job done right the first time.  We will not drive on your lawn or landscaping, we value your home and business just as much as you do.

Choosing the Right Carpet Pad

Flooring stores offer a variety of options when it comes to carpet padding including pet pad, seen in this photo.

Pet pad is a great option for those who wish to prolong the life of their carpet.  The thin plastic lining between the carpet and the pad provides a barrier from pet stains and spills. It becomes an issue, however, when you have water damage in your basement as that water will become trapped in the padding and extraction cannot happen due to the layer of plastic on the pad.  Due to this, more often times than not the pad will have to be completely removed and replaced.

When you are looking at putting carpet in your home or business make sure to consider the best option for your project.

Mold Grows on Organic Materials

Mold is present nearly everywhere inside and outside of a home or business.  In order for mold to begin growing it needs both an organic host and moisture.  At times prolonged exposure to moisture will allow mold to grow behind materials which makes it difficult to see and treat.

Mold can grow on any of the following materials...

  • Wood
  • Paper
  • Drywall
  • Insulation
  • Natural fibers
  • Plants, potting soil
  • Paints
  • Starch in wallpaper paste
  • Caulk

When you spot mold in your home make sure you call the professionals at SERVPRO of Spencer & Iowa Great Lakes to properly dispose of the affected areas and prevent any future growth from happening.

Hardwood Floor Drying

Our Injectidry specialty drying equipment can be used to help dry hardwood floors and potentially save the floors from a more-costly replacement. This equipment is ideal for spot drying; it’s durable and easy to use. It is used with a pressure blower to vacuum water vapor out of wet hardwoods. Its gasket seal makes taping unnecessary. The mat is hands off; once installed it can be left alone. The process is non-invasive, so the chance of floor damage is less.

Water Damage in Houston

SERVPRO works to save as many of your personal content items as we can, but when water sits too long and is not dried out correctly and immediately, items may have to be disposed of for health reasons.

In this photo we took in Houston, you can see the amount of personal items needing to be tossed. Due to Hurricane Harvey, response and recovery teams were not able to quickly get into homes to dry out these items, causing one of the largest insurance claim events in US history.

Save Your Wood Floors After Water Damage

Flooding and hardwood flooring don't mix (as seen in this photo from a building in Houston after Hurricane Harvey left water behind.)

Depending on how long the floor was wet, damage can vary. Here are some signs of damage to look for:

1. Staining and/or discoloration
2. Cupping and buckling from absorbed moisture
3. Popping nails
4. Lifting of floorboards (especially at the ends)
5. Mold growth (can occur within 48 hours of flooding)

If you suspect your hardwood floors have come in contact with water, give us a call.

Water After Storm

Our SERVPRO team faced many obstacles as we traveled to Houston to help with the cleanup. One of the main issues facing our team was the fact that most roads were impassible due to standing water. It took our team upwards of 3-4 hours to get to a job that was less than 6 blocks away.

Desiccant Dries Large Commercial Building

Our SERVPRO team was able to quickly dry a large office building in Houston, TX after Hurricane Harvey left water in it's wake, using our state of the art Arid Dry 5000 Large Loss Electric Desiccant.

Mold from Storm

When Hurricane Harvey hit, our SERVPRO team responded immediately. Our team heard the news of the hurricane and prepared for the worst. Within a few days, our team was on the way to Houston. Most of our team focused on the rebuilding and restoration of residential and commercial businesses.

When severe water damage comes into play, mold is likely to surface shortly afterward. Mold can begin to grow 48 to 72 hours after the water hits the exposed area. In the case of Hurricane Harvey, the area in question had the perfect growing environment for mold. This picture was the result of water on the area affected and massive mold growth.

Black Mold Found in Den

Stachybotrys chartarum is often referred to as “black mold” due to its slimy black appearance. It’s sometimes referred to as “toxic mold,” although the mold itself is not toxic; it produces toxic compounds called mycotoxins, which cause health problems when people come in contact with them.  Stachybotrys chartarum has a characteristic musty odor and usually grows in places that stay damp all the time, like in air conditioning ducts where there is a lot of condensation or around leaky pipes.

Aspergillus/Penicillium Mold in Attic of House - Caused By Excessive Humidity

Aspergillus is a type of mold frequently found indoors. It can cause health problems.

Penicillium is often found growing on materials that have been damaged by water, including carpeting, wallpaper, insulation, and furnishings like mattresses. It’s one of the mold types that spread quickly and easily from one part of the home to another. Exposure to penicillium can cause allergic reactions, chronic sinus infections, and inflammation of the lungs. Usually appears as a blue mold and/or a green mold.

Cladosporium Mold in Crawl Space of House

Cladosporium is a type of mold often found growing inside homes. While most types of mold prefer warm climates, cladosporium can grow in cool areas, too. It often grows on fabrics, like carpets, and on wood surfaces, like cabinets and floorboards. It can cause a variety of respiratory problems.

Mold Remediation

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. SERVPRO Franchise Professionals use antifungal and antimicrobial treatments to eliminate mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.
